Dr Koizumi is interested in physiology and pathophysiology of glia-to-neuron interaction and interested in ATP/purinergic signaling, a pivotal mediator between glia and neurons. The current special interest is to clarify mechanisms underlying glia-mediated synapse formation, elimination and neuronal network remodeling.

Dr Koizumi received his Ph.D. at Kyushu University in 1992 majored in Neuropharmacology. He did his posdoc at the Human Health Science Foundation in Japan (Prof. Inoue) and at Cambridge University in UK (Prof. Berridge). In 1999 he obtained a Principal Investigator position at the National Institute of Health Sciences, Tokyo Japan, and was awarded a professorship in 2007 at the Department of Neuropharmacology, Graduate School of Medicine, University of Yamanashi in Japan. He currently serves as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in the University, and is also the President of the Japanese Society for Neurochemistry.
